Inverter drives have been used in pumps and compressors for quite some time now. And with good reason: electronically controlling the motor speed helps save energy and reduce wear on materials. That’s why appropriate guidelines are also included in legal regulations such as the European ErP directive.
Inverter drives electronically control the speed of induction and permanent magnet motors. They have the potential to significantly increase the efficiency of pumps and compressors, in particular when they run with changing loads. This is the reason why the European ErP (energy-related products) directive, also called the Ecodesign Directive (2005/32/EC and 2009/125/EC) covers the use of inverter drives. The European Commission passed this directive in 2005 to govern environmentally friendly designs for energy-related products at the EU level.
The first two phases primarily focused on defining efficiency requirements for individual products. The resulting mandates have led to a ban on the distribution of motors below the IE2 efficiency class since 2011. As of the beginning of 2015, motors with rated power of 7.5 kW to 375 kW must meet the requirements of the IE3 efficiency class – or be controlled by an inverter drive.
